Coastal Transformation: From 70s Dark and Dated to Light-Filled Family Haven in the Northern Beaches

A remarkable transformation of an original 1970s house in the Northern Beaches for a young professional couple and their growing family. The home, previously dark and lacking functionality, has been reimagined into a spacious, light-filled sanctuary that takes full advantage of the stunning coastal views. Engaged to assist with designs, approvals, and construction, our goal was to create a home that reflects the couple’s desire for a modern, coastal Hamptons look while providing the space and functionality their family needed.

Client’s Requirements

The clients came to us seeking to transform their outdated 70s-built home into a modern family retreat. Their brief was clear: they needed more space, more light, and a layout that would better suit their active family. The home’s original design felt cramped and didn’t maximise the breathtaking views. They wanted to extend the house, open it up, and create a seamless flow between indoor and outdoor living areas. Their vision also included a coastal Hamptons aesthetic that would match the laid-back charm of their surroundings.

Design Vision

Our design focused on enhancing the home’s natural light, expanding the living spaces, and creating a layout that was both functional and beautiful. With the client’s love for the coastal Hamptons style in mind, we chose finishes and materials that evoke a timeless, relaxed elegance, while making sure every room felt connected to the stunning Northern Beaches landscape. By reconfiguring the layout, we were able to create an open, airy environment that truly embraces indoor-outdoor living.

Key Features of the Project

Extension and Reconfiguration: The original layout was not functional for a growing family. We extended the house, adding new living spaces that flow seamlessly from one area to the next. This included creating an expansive open-plan kitchen, dining, and living area that opens out to a large outdoor deck, perfect for entertaining and enjoying the coastal views.

Coastal Hamptons Aesthetic: The design incorporates elements of the Hamptons style, such as soft coastal tones, weatherboard panelling, and shaker-style cabinetry in the kitchen. These features combine to create a relaxed yet elegant coastal feel that perfectly suits the home’s Northern Beaches location.

Maximising Natural Light: One of the key priorities was to bring in as much natural light as possible. We introduced large windows, skylights, and glass bifold doors to flood the home with light and frame the beautiful views. The new design creates a bright, airy atmosphere, making every room feel welcoming and spacious.

Indoor-Outdoor Living: A major focus of the transformation was enhancing the connection between the indoor living spaces and the outdoors. We installed bi-fold doors that open onto a new deck and outdoor entertaining area, allowing for a seamless flow between inside and out. This has not only maximised the use of space but also brought the stunning views of the Northern Beaches into the heart of the home.

Functional Spaces for Family Living: The new design caters to the needs of a growing family. We added extra bedrooms and bathrooms, ensuring each family member has their own space while also creating shared areas that foster connection. Storage solutions were also a key focus, with custom joinery that maximises functionality without compromising style.

Challenges and Solutions

Renovating an original 1970s home presented challenges, particularly in terms of its dark, cramped layout. By extending the house and reconfiguring the floor plan, we were able to create a home that feels much larger and more functional. Another challenge was incorporating modern features while ensuring the home still captured the timeless coastal Hamptons style the clients desired. Through careful material selection and design choices, we struck the perfect balance between modernity and classic charm.

The Result

The result is a stunning family home that perfectly meets the needs of our clients. The once dark and outdated house is now a light-filled, open-plan retreat that takes full advantage of the stunning views. The coastal Hamptons style is beautifully executed, providing an elegant yet relaxed aesthetic that the family can enjoy for years to come.

This Northern Beaches home transformation demonstrates how a thoughtful design and renovation process can completely change the functionality and aesthetic of a home. By addressing the clients’ needs for more space, light, and a coastal feel, we’ve created a stunning home that reflects their lifestyle and maximises the beauty of its surroundings.
