Client’s Requirements 

The clients were captivated by the history and character of their heritage sandstone home but felt it required a functional upgrade to match their busy lifestyle. They engaged us to oversee the entire process, from the initial design concepts to securing approvals and managing the construction. Their goal was to retain the original features while introducing modern elements like open-plan living, updated interiors, and a connection to the outdoors. 

Design Vision 

Our design approach was focused on harmoniously blending the old with the new. We carefully balanced preserving the unique historical features with modernising key areas such as the kitchen, living spaces, bathrooms and rear yard. We worked closely with heritage overlays to ensure the design was respectful of the home’s character, while also creating an open, light-filled environment that reflected the couple’s contemporary taste. 

Key Features of the Project 

Preservation of Original Features: One of the central aspects of this project was preserving and restoring the original features. These historic features were carefully integrated into the new design, serving as a stunning backdrop to the modern updates throughout the home. 

Open-Plan Living: The home’s original layout was typical of older heritage properties—compartmentalised and dark. We reconfigured the space, creating an open-plan living, dining, and kitchen area that maximises natural light and improves the home’s flow. This transformation not only enhanced the functionality but also created a perfect space for entertaining. 

Modern Kitchen Design: The kitchen was reimagined with a sleek, modern look, featuring high-end appliances and custom cabinetry. We ensured that the new design harmonised with the home’s heritage elements, using finishes that complemented the sandstone walls while delivering all the comforts of a modern kitchen. 

Indoor-Outdoor Connection: To embrace a more contemporary lifestyle, we introduced large bi-fold doors that open up the living area to the newly designed courtyard. This seamless indoor-outdoor connection brings in abundant natural light and creates an extended entertainment space perfect for the couple’s social gatherings. 

Luxurious Bathroom Redesign: The bathrooms were transformed into spa-like retreats with modern fixtures and finishes. A new bathtub, rain shower, and elegant tiling were chosen to complement the overall design, ensuring the space felt both luxurious and in keeping with the home’s aesthetic. 

Challenges and Solutions 

Undertaking a renovation in a heritage-listed area always comes with its challenges. The main challenge was balancing the preservation of the original features with access to the property limited to the front door for all trades and materials. Our team overcame this by strategically integrating modern elements that enhance, rather than compete with, the heritage features. This approach allowed us to deliver a home that feels cohesive and timeless. 

The Result 

The result is a beautifully transformed heritage semi that respects its historical roots while embracing the couple’s modern lifestyle. The preserved sandstone walls now serve as the home’s centrepiece, while the open-plan layout, modern kitchen, and luxurious bathrooms have completely revitalised the space. The seamless indoor-outdoor connection further enhances the home, making it a perfect retreat for both quiet evenings and lively social events.
