A 1970s Home Reimagined for Coastal Family Living
An alterations and additions project in Beacon Hill that transformed a dark, dated 1970s home into a light-filled, coastal Hamptons-style family retreat.
The Brief
The clients were a young professional couple with a growing family who wanted to transform their original 1970s home into a modern family retreat.
The existing layout felt cramped and dark, and didn’t make the most of the home’s coastal views. The goal was to extend the house, open it up, and create a stronger connection between indoor and outdoor living, all in a coastal Hamptons style suited to the home’s Northern Beaches setting.
They wanted a home with more space and more light, built for the way an active family actually lives.
The Wishlist
The clients wanted:
– An extended home with an open-plan kitchen, dining and living area
– A coastal Hamptons aesthetic, including weatherboard panelling and shaker-style cabinetry
– Large windows, skylights and bifold doors to maximise natural light
– A strong connection between the indoor living areas and a new outdoor deck
– Extra bedrooms and bathrooms for a growing family
– Custom joinery and storage solutions throughout
The Challenge
The project came with the constraints typical of an original 1970s home, which meant the existing layout was dark, cramped and didn’t suit a growing family or take advantage of the property’s coastal views.
As the project progressed, the team needed to balance introducing modern features, more space and more light, with keeping the timeless coastal Hamptons style the clients wanted throughout.
Without the right guidance, extending and reconfiguring a home like this can easily result in a mismatch between the new and existing spaces, or a design that gains space but loses the character the clients were after.
WHAT WE DID
Construction Concierge facilitated the design and construction team needed to manage the project from design and approvals through to construction.
We facilitated the design team for the project and provided ongoing support as they developed the extension and reconfigured the floor plan, working towards an open-plan kitchen, dining and living space with large windows, skylights and bifold doors to maximise natural light and connect the home to its coastal surrounds.
When the design moved into construction, we facilitated the build team and provided ongoing support through the extension, the kitchen renovation, the pool renovation, and the addition of extra bedrooms and bathrooms, along with the custom joinery and storage solutions throughout.
Throughout the project, the clients had guidance across every stage, from design and approvals through to the finished result, while we helped keep the design and construction teams working towards the same outcome.
The Outcome
The result is a Beacon Hill home transformed from a dark, dated 1970s house into a light-filled, open-plan family retreat.
The home was extended and reconfigured for open-plan living, finished in a coastal Hamptons style with weatherboard panelling and shaker-style cabinetry. The clients gained a home with more space, more light and a stronger connection to the outdoors, built to suit their family for years to come.
THE TAKEAWAY
A dark, dated home does not have to mean losing the character you’re after in the process of gaining space.
