A terrace renovation in Glebe that transformed a dated, boxed-in layout into an open-plan home built for modern indoor-outdoor living.
The Brief
The clients were a professional couple who wanted to bring a terrace in Glebe into line with the way they actually lived.
The existing layout was compartmentalised into small, separate rooms that felt cramped and outdated. The goal was to open the home up, creating a connected living, kitchen and dining space with a direct link to the outdoors.
They wanted a home that felt spacious and functional day to day, and worked just as well for entertaining.
The Wishlist
The clients wanted:
– An open-plan living, kitchen and dining space
– A new, functional kitchen with a high-end finish
– A modern, practical bathroom
– A courtyard that extended the living space outdoors
– More natural light throughout the home
– A layout that made the most of a narrow terrace footprint
The Challenge
The project came with the constraints typical of a narrow inner-Sydney terrace, which meant space was limited and the original layout worked against, rather than for, an open-plan outcome.
The existing rooms were small and separated, cutting the home off from natural light and making it feel far smaller than its footprint allowed. Opening the space up meant identifying which walls could come down without compromising the structure, and finding a layout that still felt considered rather than knocked-through.
Without the right sequencing of design and construction decisions, a project like this can easily end up structurally compromised, over budget, or short of the openness the client is after.
WHAT WE DID
Construction Concierge facilitated the design and construction team the project needed to take the terrace from its original layout to an open-plan home.
We facilitated the design team for the project and provided ongoing support as they worked through the layout, identifying which walls could be removed to open up the living, kitchen and dining areas, and planning for bifold doors connecting the new living space to the courtyard. The goal was to maximise natural light and flow without compromising the home’s structure.
When the design moved into construction, we facilitated the build team and provided ongoing support through the kitchen renovation, including custom cabinetry, stone benchtops and high-end appliances, as well as the bathroom renovation.
Throughout the project, the clients had guidance across every stage, from early design decisions through to the finished result, while we helped keep the design and construction teams working towards the same outcome.
The Outcome
The result is an open-plan home that connects living, kitchen, dining and courtyard into a single, light-filled space.
The cramped, compartmentalised layout was resolved. The kitchen and bathroom were brought up to a modern standard. And the clients gained a home that suits the way they actually live, day to day and when entertaining.

THE TAKEAWAY
