A heritage renovation in Mosman that updated a sandstone semi for contemporary living while preserving its original character, despite site access limited to the front door.
The Brief
The clients were a young professional couple who wanted to bring their heritage sandstone semi in Mosman up to a modern standard, without losing what made the property worth buying in the first place.
The goal was to retain the home’s original character while introducing open-plan living, updated interiors and a stronger connection to the outdoors.
They wanted a home that honoured its history while working for their busy, modern lifestyle.

The Challenge
The project came with the restrictions typical of a heritage-listed property, which meant the original sandstone and character features had to be carefully preserved throughout the renovation.
As the project progressed, site access became a significant constraint. All trades and materials could only enter and exit through the front door, which meant every stage of construction needed to be carefully sequenced around that single access point.
Without the right coordination, restricted access like this can slow a project down significantly, or force compromises in how work is staged and delivered.
WHAT WE DID
Construction Concierge facilitated the design and construction team the project needed, and provided support from initial design concepts through to securing approvals and overseeing construction.
We facilitated the design team for the project and provided ongoing support as they worked with the heritage overlays affecting the property, developing a design that preserved the original sandstone and character features while introducing an open-plan living, dining and kitchen space in place of the home’s original compartmentalised layout.
When the design moved into construction, we facilitated the build team and provided ongoing support through the kitchen renovation, the bathroom renovations, and the courtyard and bifold door installation connecting the living area to the outdoors. Construction was carefully sequenced throughout to work within the constraint of front-door-only access for all trades and materials.
Throughout the project, the clients had guidance across every stage, from design and approvals through to the finished result, while we helped keep the design and construction teams working towards the same outcome.
The Outcome
The result is a Mosman sandstone semi that preserves its heritage character while functioning as a modern, open-plan family home.
The original sandstone features were preserved and now anchor the home’s design. The layout was opened up, the kitchen and bathrooms were brought up to a modern standard, and bifold doors now connect the living area to the courtyard. The clients gained a home that respects its history while suiting the way they live today.
